Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield’s crown repair system isn’t model-specific the way a liner is. It applies to any masonry chimney crown, regardless of the flue liner brand below it. What matters is the crown material and condition. HeatShield produces two products for this: CrownCoat, a brushable sealant for hairline cracks and minor surface deterioration, and CrownSeal, a trowel-grade compound for crowns with more significant erosion or partial spalling.

To identify what you need, look at the crown from ground level with binoculars, or better yet, from the roof if you can get there safely. CrownCoat handles cracks up to 1/8 inch wide. CrownSeal rebuilds crowns that have lost more than 1/4 inch of material or have through-cracks that daylight into the flue chase. The gotcha in San Francisco’s climate: crowns on south-facing slopes often look worse than they are because thermal cycling opens surface cracks that haven’t penetrated deep. Conversely, north-facing crowns in the Sunset or Richmond can hide saturated concrete that sounds solid but has lost internal integrity.

Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing

• Crumbled concrete in the firebox or on the hearth. Pieces of your crown are making their way down the flue. This means the crown has spalled, usually from water freezing in surface pores during our occasional cold snaps. The fragments are abrasive and will accelerate liner wear if ignored.
• Water stains on the ceiling near the chimney breast. In San Francisco’s Victorian and Edwardian homes, the chimney often runs through the center of the house. A cracked crown lets water track down the outside of the flue tiles, soaking into lath and plaster. We’ve seen this mistaken for roof leaks in Noe Valley and the Mission more times than we can count.
• Efflorescence, the white powder on exterior brick. This is mineral salts left behind as water moves through the masonry and evaporates. It means water is entering somewhere above, and the crown is the first place to check. In the Outer Sunset, where Warren grew up, the salt air accelerates this.
• Rust stains on the chimney face below the crown. Your crown should shed water clear of the brickwork. If water is running down the sides, it’s finding gaps in the crown slope or cracks at the flue tile interface. The rust is from corroded flue ties or the damper frame.
• Vegetation growing from crown cracks. A small weed or moss colony means enough soil and moisture have accumulated to support life. This only happens when the crown has been deteriorating for multiple seasons. We pulled a mature nasturtium from a cracked crown on a Pacific Heights job last spring.
