Which Famco Models This Applies To
Famco crowns break down into three main series you’ll find around San Francisco: the CC-series chimney caps with integrated crown bases, the WC-series wind-resistant models common in the Sunset and Richmond where the Pacific wind hits hard, and the older RC-series rain caps that mount on a separate crown plate. The CC-series uses a 13-inch or 15-inch crown base depending on flue tile count; the WC-series runs 17-inch on single-flue installations. Check the stamped model number on the underside of the cap rim, or measure the crown base width across the flat top where it seals to the flue.
We carry both OEM Famco replacement crowns and quality aftermarket equivalents from Gelco and Olympia Chimney. For the CC-series, we typically recommend OEM because the bolt pattern is proprietary and aftermarket units often need field modification. For the RC-series with the separate plate, the Olympia Chimney equivalent fits without alteration and carries the same 10-year material warranty. One compatibility gotcha: the WC-series changed crown depth in 2008, so a 2006 WC-171 won’t accept a 2010 crown base without a spacer kit we fabricate in-house.
Signs Your Famco Crown Repair Is Failing
- Water in the firebox after rain. The crown’s seal to the flue tile has cracked or the crown itself has spalled, letting water run straight down the flue. In San Francisco’s salt-laden fog, this happens faster than inland because the moisture carries chloride that accelerates freeze-thaw damage even in mild winters.
- Efflorescence or white staining on the exterior masonry below the crown. Water is getting behind the crown and leaching minerals out of the mortar joints. We see this constantly on Edwardian chimneys in Noe Valley where the original crowns were poured too thin.
- Cracks visible on the crown surface, especially radiating from the flue opening. Thermal cycling expands and contracts the concrete; Famco’s standard crowns use a 4,000-psi mix that holds up well, but after 15 to 20 years of Bay Area temperature swings, microcracks widen enough to let water penetrate.
- The cap sits crooked or rocks when touched. The crown base underneath has eroded or the anchor bolts have corroded through. This is more than cosmetic; a loose cap in a Richmond District winter storm becomes a projectile hazard.
- Damp or musty smell from the fireplace even when it hasn’t rained recently. Water is pooling in the smoke chamber because the crown crack is small enough to limit flow but large enough to maintain moisture intrusion. This one fools homeowners because the symptom lags the rain by days.

DIY or Call Us?
There’s a safe middle ground here. You can check the model stamp and measure the crown base from the ground with binoculars. You can look for the cracks and stains we’ve described. What you should not do is climb onto a pitched roof to unbolt a crown assembly, especially on a San Francisco Victorian with a 12/12 pitch and a century of deferred maintenance. The crown itself is heavy concrete or cast aluminum depending on series, and the bolt torque spec matters; too loose and it leaks, too tight and you crack the flue tile.
